General Information FAQS
No. We are a direct fee for service clinic. However, we do accept HSA and FSA payments.
Specifically for birth, we are able to provide you with a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company on your own. However, clients are still responsible for payment to Flourish and any reimbursement you get from your insurance will come directly to you. There is a lot of variation from insurance plan to plan but we will help with this process to the best of our ability. Many of the healthshare plans cover birth so well and are so easy to work with.
No! While many of our services are geared toward women, we see the whole family!
We have a wonderful pediatric nurse practitioner who is double boarded in both acute and chronic management of children. Madison Bren is well-educated, professional and compassionate. She is committed to listening to children and their parents and providing the space for asking questions, sharing concerns and together making a plan that is best for children. She strongly values a root cause approach that not only leads to healing of a current condition or illness, but also gives tools and strategies for life long health, wellness, and vitality.
And…we see men! Our nurse practitioner, Melissa Lehr sees men (and women too!) for everything from thyroid and hormone health to gut health, weight concerns or struggles with fatigue or muscle recovery. She too takes time to sit and listen with men, and is committed to digging deeper together to find the root cause of the symptoms and a plan of care that can set them on a trajectory to feeling stronger and healthier again!
We loving giving potential patients the opportunity to come, see our space, and meet our providers! Typically we will recommend a Prenatal Discovery Tour or a Pediatric Meet and Greet which is a FREE appointment that includes a tour of our clinic and/or birth center space. This will be a direct meeting with one of our midwives, Erin, Kelsey or Sarah, or our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Madison to get all of your questions answered and learn more about what care at Flourish looks like. From there we can talk about what next steps would be if you decide Flourish is right for you and your family!
You can call us to book this appointment, (605) 271-4170, or you can also book online under our services tab.
All appointment invoices and lab costs/fees are due on the date the service is provided. All supplements and products must also be paid on the day of purchase as well.

Birthing fAQs
YES! This is something we stopped doing for a while; however, now that we have grown our midwife team to three, we do plan to take a small number of home births each month. We only plan to offer this service in the greater Sioux Falls area–within a 15 mile radius of the birth center.
Yes! Flourish has beautiful Active Birth Pools that were installed in September 2024.
Waterbirth offers several potential benefits for both mothers and baby. It can enhance the overall birthing experience by fostering a more serene and empowering atmosphere. Some people find waterbirth helps them feel more in control of their labor and delivery.
While experience is unique, and some mothers will not desire to labor or deliver in the tub (and that’s OK!), here are some advantages:
For the Birthing Mother:
- Relief: Warm water can help relax muscles and reduce the perception of pain, offering a natural form of pain management.
- Relaxation: The buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure of water can ease tension, promote relaxation, and help reduce anxiety during labor.
- Improved Mobility: The buoyancy of water allows greater freedom of movement, making it easier to find comfortable positions during labor and delivery.
- Shorter Labor Duration: Waterbirth may help some people progress through the active phase of labor due to the relaxation and comfort it provides.
- Reduced Risk of Perineal Lacerations: The hydrostatic pressure the water provides supports the perineum, increases circulation to the perineum, softens tissues and reduces the overall incidence of perineal lacerations.
For the Baby:
- Gentler Transition: Being born into warm water may provide a smoother transition from the womb, mimicking the amniotic environment.
- Calmer Environment: The reduced stimuli (light, noise, and temperature change) in a waterbirth environment may result in a calmer birth experience for the baby.
Great question! No, our three midwives do work off of a call schedule and share call for all Flourish mothers. Whoever is assigned call on your birthing day will be the one to attend your birth. For this reason, you are welcome to have a primary midwife, but we do recommend seeing the other midwives for a few visits just to meet their smiling face in the event they are on call for your birth.
After a Flourish birth, our typical stay is relatively short compared to a hospital birth. Most families stay for 4 to 6 hours after the baby is born, depending on how well the mother and baby are doing. The exact timing can vary depending on a mother and baby’s specific situation. Your midwife will walk your through what is included in the immediate postpartum recovery, but we prioritize protecting a space for you to bond, make sure mom and baby both get fed, and monitor vital signs and well being for both as well.
Each month we accept 12 expecting mothers. However, we are very intentional with these due dates to be sure they are as evenly spread throughout the month. If we already have 12 mothers when a new mom reaches out to us, we do have a waitlist that we can add her too or the option to choose a “Prenatal Care with Hospital Delivery” or our “Peace of Mind” package.
Please make sure and ask us about our transfer rate! This is a statistic that we are very proud of!
Early is your pregnancy, you will choose which hospital you prefer if transfer is needed. In the event that a transfer is needed, all aspects of this would be discussed with you and your birthing team. In the event of an emergency, the Flourish team has the supplies and training to manage your immediate care and an ambulance would be called for transport; however, if mama and baby are both stable, you are able to transfer by private car. Every situation is often unique. that being said our team is committed to being sure you are fully supported through the transport process and will do what we need to to support you in the process. We pride ourselves on communicating well with the receiving hospital and making sure a smooth and concise handoff is made to the hospital team. Once this occurs, the hospital team will assume full care.
At Flourish, we value the sacred act of birth and pride ourselves on being able to deliver personalized, low intervention care in an environment that feels safe and welcoming for women and their families. Early in our midwifery training, one of our wise mentors taught us that midwives are the “Guardians of Natural Birth” and that the mother delivers their own baby into the world. As midwives, our hands are used to gently welcome and guide the baby into their mothers arms and cultivate a warm and protected space for their bonding to continue.
Some other key advantages of choosing a Flourish over a hospital birth include:
Personalized Care
- Flourish provides a more intimate, home-like environment. Our care is tailored to the individual, with more emphasis on forming a personal connection between the expecting mother and their midwife and care team.
- Appointments are longer, allowing for more in-depth discussions, education and empowerment.
Lower Intervention Rates
- Flourish focuses on natural, physiologic birth. Tools such as prenatal education, deep relaxation and breathing techniques, hydrotherapy and hands on labor support are used to support and guide through the labor process. We do our best not to “touch” labor, but rather create a space for labor to happen in a natural, organic state. We do not offer inductions, epidurals, continuous fetal monitoring, or cesarean sections.
Comfortable, Home-like Environment
- The atmosphere is designed to feel warm and welcoming We have two private birth rooms, comfortable beds, and common space for family or support persons.
- In the birth center, mothers are free to move as their body leads, choose the position of their choice, and have access to the use of birthing tools (e.g., tubs, mats, balls).
Family-Centered Approach
- Flourish encourages the active involvement of family members, partners, or doulas in the birth process.
- There are fewer restrictions on the number of people who can be present during labor and delivery; however, mothers are encouraged to openly discuss their plans for this with their midwife.
Transparent Pricing
- Flourish offers a global package for care–this includes transparent pricing with no hidden or additional costs. All prenatal visits, delivery fees, and postpartum visits are included in this package as well as a prenatal class of the mother’s choice. Births tend to be significantly less expensive than hospital births, largely due to the reduced use of medical interventions and shorter stays.
Focus on Postpartum Support
- At Flourish we value the Fourth Trimester! Not only do we see you at 24 hours postpartum, we have appointments at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks to be sure you have the support you need. We also offer lactation support, guidance for newborn care (the first 2 weeks of babies care are included in the global maternity package), and follow-up visits as they are needed for both mom and baby.
Autonomy and Shared Decision-Making
- Flourish empowers mothers to be active participants of their care. It is not lost on what privilege it is to walk alongside women on this sacred journey and the mutual trust it requires. We have every intention of valuing and prioritizing this throughout their care.
Midwife originally meant “with-woman“. We love this definition and truly want to embody it however we can. A midwife is a lot of things, but they are first and foremost someone who is with you on the journey–who holds your hand through the process, is a listening ear, shoulder to cry on and a fierce cheerleader!
Flourish has a team of three Certified Nurse Midwives. A Certified Nurse Midwife is an advanced practice registered nurse who specializes in providing care to to women of all ages throughout their lives.
Reasons to Consider a Flourish Midwife for Your Birth
- Personalized, Holistic Care: Our midwives take time to develop relationships with our mamas, addressing not just physical health but emotional and mental well-being.
- Lower Intervention Rates: Studies show that midwife-led care results in lower intervention and C-section rates.
- Continuity of Care: There are just three of us so we are a small team. It is easier to feel connected and our entire clinic team values knowing you and your family. You will most often have the same midwife and nurse throughout your labor stay with us.
- Support for Natural Birth: If you are looking for a birth that supports your physiological birth and the power and beauty of the maternal body, midwives are the way to go! Our skilled Flourish midwives value the opportunity to be the Guardians of Natural Childbirth.
- Educational Focus: Our midwives do not miss an opportunity to educate or provide clarity or explanations along the journey. This is not specific just to the prenatal period, but will continue throughout your labor, birth and postpartum period as well. You also will find so much value in the prenatal classes Flourish provides.
- Flexible Birth Settings: At Flourish, you have the option to choose between birth center or home birth.
